Shillong Blooming in Pink

 It is November, the weather sets up for a freezing winter and Meghalaya gets ready to bloom in pretty pink. You will see Mother Nature in all her grandeur in Shillong during this time. The Cherry Blossom, a gift from Himalayas cover the whole East and West Khasi Hills. These beautiful and sparkling flowers can be spotted across the state during autumn of every year. However, the Cherry Blossom begins in the early November and lasts for about a fortnight only. Cherry Tree found in North Eastern India is Prunus Cerasoides commonly known as Himalayan Cherry. The trees are full of pastel-hue pink and soft white blossoms.

It was until autumn 2014 even when many indigenous son of soil were not aware about Cherry tree, Prof. Sahoo found full bloom Cherry tree in Shillong. Since then there have been growing interest in the tree in this part of India. During 2015-2017, State forest department planted several Cherry trees in and around Shillong. 

India International Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated in Shillong during November each year. This festival started its first chapter in 2016 and has been held every year since. Plethora of activities such as dance shows, live music, K-pop music, Korean barbeque, beauty pageant, photography competition and many more are lined up for you in this festival. Further, you can explore Meghalayan culture, games, traditional food, wine and handicrafts. The festival is held across different venues such as Polo Ground, Ward’s Lake, Golf Course etc. Travellers from across the globe visit Shillong to attend the magnificent Cherry blossom festival, enjoy the refreshing beauty and to participate in other activities.

Besides Shillong, Japanese Cherry Blossom festival is an important tradition for Japanese people and commonly known as Hanami. This festival is celebrated all over Japan during the spring. Prunus Yedoensis commonly known as Somei Yoshima is the Cherry blossom tree mostly found in countries like Japan and it blossoms in the spring season. Moreover countries like US, South Korea, France, New Zealand etc. do celebrate Cherry blossom festival and they have their own significance.

It is needless to spend tens of thousands rupees to visit Japan or Washington DC for admiring the beauty of Cherry blossom. The charming hill town of Meghalaya, commonly known as east of Scotland will welcome you with all its elegance with much less toll on you.


Umroi is officially nearest airport to Shillong with very little air traffic. However, Guwahati airport is the most convenient one to reach Shillong. Guwahati railway station is major station and has rail connectivity with most of the major cities in India. Cabs are available both at LGBI airport and Guwahati railway station and takes about three hours to reach Shillong.
